William Henry 'Bill' Thorne was the son of William J. Thorne (a policeman) and Mary Hunter. Married Kathleen Walshe on 23rd February 1927 in Clara Church, Gowran, County Kilkenny. Awarded a Silver Scott Medal in 1962 for his actions in tackling a man armed with a rifle at a house in Ballinalee, Longford, on 26th December 1961. Retired in August 1965. Two of his sons also served as Gardai (Detective Sergeant Mark Thorne and Garda Frank Thorne). |
