Son of Thomas Coonan and Margaret Rourke. Worked as a Butcher before joining. Was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his IRA Service during War of Independence. Stationed in Castledermott (1922-1923), Ballinrobe (1923-1927), Killala (1927-1942), Ennistymon, McCurtain Street Cork (1942-1949), Wexford (1949-1952) Mohill (1952-1953) and Thomastown (1953-1965). Promoted to Sergeant on 1st March 1923, Inspector on 1st December 1942 and Superintendent on 19th November 1952. Was Sergeant of Weights and Measures for Portlaoise and Ennistymon. Married Mary 'Maura' Cowan (native of Ennistymon) on 24th June 1931. Retired on 11th June 1965 and was actively involved in community events such as the Wheelchairs Association and Tidy Towns. Died at Waterford County and City Infirmary on 3rd January 1978. |
